You Only Get What You Give.... Employee Value Propositions

Employee Value Proposition (EVP) is a term used to denote the balance of the rewards and benefits that are received by an employee in return for their performance at the workplace. It is a key concept in Employer Branding however should not be confused to be one and the same. Employer Branding is the personality of the organisation.

Minchington (2005) defines an EVP as a set of associations and offerings that characterizes an employer or position and differentiates it from its competitors. An EVP must be unique, relevant and compelling if it is to act as a key driver of talent attraction, engagement and retention.
Other key factors influencing how an individual may choose to balance his or her career path in an organisation are;

Compensation - salary, incentives, cash recognition, pay process

Benefits – healthcare, retirement, insurances,recognition programs

Affiliation – work environment, trust, transparency, organizational commitment

Career – advancement opportunities, personal growth and development, training, job security

Work Content – challenge, autonomy, meaningfulness, variety

Astor Levin’s 2007 EVP National Survey results showed that only 56% of respondents believe that their expectations upon joining their employer had been met.

What are your 10 out of 10's?

How do you stay connected with who you are and keep perspective on the world we live in. It is easy to get wrapped up in problems at work with people or projects that can be magnified to an unbelievable extent. Of course weeks later when the dust settles and you have moved on to another drama, perspective places old issues in the who cares pile, almost laughable at how much head space and stress they derived.

So what is Dr Fred Grosses's 10/10 all about?

Simply....it's anything that puts a smile on your face.

But there is 1 rule. It must be possible to achieve every
single day. So racing formula 1 cars at the Grand Prix does
not qualify, as (for most) it is not achievable every day.


My list of 10/10's are things like....

  • Seeing the sun coming up over Sydney Harbour in the morning
  • Taking 5 min in a steaming hot shower
  • Seeing my twin niece todlers laugh and smile
  • Hearing my friend's voice in London over the phone
  • Feeling the sand between my feet
  • Hearing the sound of the ocean
  • The feeling of sweat drenched clothes after a great work out
  • Belting out a favourite tune in the car as I cruise around town with the wind blowing in my hair...

And I could go on!

Spend 5 minutes or so to come up with your list of 10/10's. What are the simple things in life that put a smile on your face. Keep a mental note of what makes you smile each day.....and create a list! Then make sure you fit 2 or 3 into every day as a reminder of how easy it is to feel good. Plus it is impossible to be angry, sad or stressed when you have a smile on your face!
